Off the beaten path, far from the throngs of tourists, a treasure trove of hidden gems lies waiting to be discovered by the intrepid street art enthusiast. Mercado Abelardo Rodríguez is a traditional open-air market, considered to be a prototype model upon its construction in the 1930s. Utilizing Baroque, Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco elements, the architecture provides a unique background for the many stunning murals that grace its walls. With works from legendary artists such as Ramón Alva, Pablo O’Higgins, Antonio Pujol, and sisters Marion and Grace Greenwood, the murals are both an homage to the legendary Diego Rivera (who oversaw much of their creation) and an embrace of socialist ideology.
